Dragon Ball Multiverse: Chapter 1 – Review

Cover of the first chapter, showing off only a handful of characters in the series.

Rating: 7/10

For those of you who don’t know me, I am Alessandro Guarrera, and I am a Troper. A Troper? That’s someone who spends heaps of time on TV Tropes; which is basically a massive wiki where people like me analyse various shows, books, games et al to hell and back. On a daily TV Tropes binge I discovered Dragon Ball Multiverse under their ‘Fanfic Recs’ section of the Dragon Ball page. Here goes my review:

Dragon Ball Multiverse is a fan made web-comic created by some very dedicated French DBZ lovers known only by their online names; Salagir and Gogeta Jr, as well as a large dedicated team of fans. Set some 10 years after DBZ (DBGT doesn't exist in this setting) a mysterious race of Bipedal birds who have inter-dimensional technology have decided to throw a tournament (For some reason) but more on that later. The first chapter starts off in the middle of a battle between Vegetto and Broly. The artwork of the chapter is really good, looking just like Toriyama’s, and the colours are even better than the animated series.

Opening the series mid battle (Or in media res for all you film buffs) is a nice trick, keeping new readers interested and making sure they’ll read on to see how it ends. Moreover by opening the series in colour it only serves to showcase just how powerful these two titans really are. That said, I did have some problems with this chapter. After moving back to the beginning of this story, the colour leaves. NO COLOUR! Yes, I like black and white pages and can appreciate that they’ll be produced faster, the change still made me feel let down. Then there was the story, while only the first chapter, it felt slightly shallow. A tournament in a foreign universe facing fighters from other planes? Why? Then again, who cares? The best thing about this chapter? The revelation that the universe we know and love is not universe 1 or universe prime, but universe 18.
