Uub and Buu? But what are Vegetto and Bra doing here? |
To recap, chapter 2 ended with the meet and greet between the characters of universes 18 & 13, during which much hilarity ensued. The funniest moment, in my opinion, was when Gohan and Goten of universe 18, revealed to Kakarot of universe 13, that they were his sons.
As chapter 3 opens, all the (EDIT, Namekian) characters of universe 10, except for Nail, have quit the tournament; having realised how vastly outclassed they are by their potential competitors and, especially in the case of the Saiyans, out of shame.
The first match of this issue ends quickly, with android #17′s competitor, I’K'L, yet to be born! The next match is even quicker, being between the southern Kaio Shin of universe 1, and Butta* of universe 8. The match ends predictably and hilariously, with Butta’s much vaunted speed not getting any screen time at all. The next match between Majin Buu (universe 11) and Bujin (universe 6) ends similarly, with Buu foiling all of Bujin’s strategies, and finishing him off with a punch to the head.
The chapter continues onwards and Gohan of universe 18 meets the Gohan and Videl of universe 16. After the initial confusion and obligatory explanation of the cause of divergence-Vegetto- the next match is between Uub and an original character, Tidar. Unlike the other fighters, Tidar relies on advanced nanotechnology instead of Ki manipulation to succeed in battle. As powerful as Uub is, Tidar manages to have a few tricks up his sleeve…
Now what else can I say about the comic? The art, works well, staying true to form, and looking as though it was made by Toriyama himself. The anime conventions that we all know and love are displayed, with the face faults, beads of sweat and what not, making DBM feel more like a professionally produced web-comic rather than an online fan-fiction. The main complaint I have is the cover of the chapter, how it displays Bra and Vegetto even though Bra is not seen and all, and Vegetto is barely there even in the sole page we see him in. While this kind of false advertising is common practice even in mainstream comics *cough…Wolverine…cough…Marvel*it’s still a shame to see such a cheap tactic used, especially when given the nature of a webcomic, the readers would be coming anyway and they have much less incentive to be manipulative.
All in all, it’s a good read. Now, onto chapter 4.
*or Burter, in the Funimation/Ocean dub.
